There Is Only One Moo Duk Kwan

Your generous support and donations are needed today to help keep it that way.

Moo Duk Kwan Established 1945

From humble beginnings in Japanese occupied Korea, Hwang Kee founded his first Moo Duk Kwan martial art school in Yang San Ku on November 9, 1945. He began teaching his unique martial (Moo Do) philosophy and his highly effective martial art there and soon became the one of the most widely reknown and respected martial artists in Korea.

From 1953 to 1964 Hwang Kee began expanding and the Moo Duk Kwan name that he coined and the fist logo that he designed were displayed by instructors affiliated with him to identify them as legitimate sources of training in his legendary martial art system.

Moo Duk Kwan Trademark KoreaIn 1964 at the height of the Moo Duk Kwan’s growth and success a political move to unify all Korea’s martial art schools under one name resulted in the ministry of education filing legal action to dissolve Hwang Kee’s Korean Soo Bahk Do Association in an effort to eliminate his hugely successful Moo Duk Kwan school’s unique identity.

Although under attack by his own government that was attempting to usurp his well known name and reputation, Hwang Kee resolutely defended his organization from Hwang Kee Choi Ha Dan Soo Do Mahk Kidissolution by fighting his legal battle up to the Korean Supreme Court and on through an appeal process where he won the right to retain his organization and his Moo Duk Kwan’s unique identity.

Hwang Kee’s unflagging dedication to his principles and his unwavering courage in the face of daunting and overwhelming odds exemplified his embodiment of the very martial art philosophy that he embraced and taught in each of his Moo Duk Kwan schools. His resolution never wavered in protecting that which was his and he never retreated in his battle to preserve his Moo Duk Kwan schools’ unique identity. His action way back then still provides a sterling example of resolve and Moo Do Jah Seh that all Moo Duk Kwan practitioners can aspire to exemplify in our actions today.

Hwang Kee SmilingSince 1945 Hwang Kee, and today his successor H.C. Hwang Kwan Jang Nim, have only authorized those to use the Moo Duk Kwan name and logo who have committed themselves to maintaining the standards of technical quality and philosophical understanding that is expected of Moo Duk Kwan studio owners and practitioners.

As with all things of great value, there have always been and will continue to be, unscrupulous individuals endeavoring to use the Moo Duk Kwan’s famous name and logo to their advantage and without authorization. Those engaging in this form of “identity theft” seek to benefit from the Moo Duk Kwan’s rich history, its stellar reputation and the global recognition of its name and years of goodwill associated with the Moo Duk Kwan’s identity.

Fed Patch

Today the Moo Duk Kwan’s legacy has been passed down from Founder Hwang Kee to his son H.C. Hwang Kwan Jang Nim and legally entrusted to the U.S. Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan Federation to promote, protect and preserve.

Once again, the Moo Duk Kwan’s identity has come under attack.

Just as Founder Hwang kee was forced to do in 1964, today the U.S. Federation is engaged in yet another legal action required to stop the theft of the Moo Duk Kwan’s identity by unauthorized individuals in the U.S. and Korea.  Your support and contributions are vital to this ongoing effort and the current action.
